Road-tripping through the Dalmatian Coast

Are you ready for the ultimate road trip adventure? Strap in and get ready to embark on a journey along the breathtaking Dalmatian coast, as we take you from the vibrant city of Zagreb to the enchanting Dubrovnik.

With a plethora of stunning landscapes, ancient cities, and pristine beaches, my family and I decided to take a road trip through Croatia. If you’re a frequent traveler to Europe, you may also be well acquainted with Croatia and here’s why:

For US tourists seeking to explore the beautiful countries in Europe's Schengen Area, understanding the Schengen visa rules is crucial to ensure a seamless travel experience. US tourists are given a Schengen visa to enter any country within the Schengen Area for tourism purposes. The visa allows a maximum stay of 90 days within a 180-day period. Prior to 2023, Croatia was a non-schengen country. While many European countries require visitors to obtain a Schengen visa, Croatia became our and many others’ welcoming alternative, making it an ideal option for those of us seeking to spend more time in Europe.

Croatia boasts a unique blend of Mediterranean and Eastern European influences, resulting in a truly captivating atmosphere. From the historic city of Dubrovnik, known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic," to the majestic Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Croatia offers a diverse range of experiences for everyone.

Croatia is also renowned for its warm hospitality and delectable cuisine. Indulge in fresh seafood along the coast, try traditional Croatian dishes like Ćevapi (grilled meat sausages) or Peka (slow-cooked meat and vegetables), and pair them with a glass of local Plavac Mali wine. The combination of flavors will tantalize your taste buds and leave you wanting more.

Starting Point: Zagreb

As your adventure begins in the capital city of Zagreb, make sure to spend a few days exploring its vibrant streets and historical landmarks. Delve into the heart of culture and history by visiting the Upper Town, where you can admire the iconic St. Mark's Church and the enchanting Stone Gate. Don't forget to take a stroll through the bustling streets of the Tkalciceva area lined with restaurants and cafes, where you can enjoy delicious local cuisine and immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere. Stop at your preferred rental car to begin your journey.

Discover Zadar

Leaving Zagreb behind, your road trip will hug the coastline as you make your way to Zadar, a town renowned for its ancient history and stunning sunsets.

On your way to Zadar, head inland, and you'll discover breathtaking natural wonders. The Plitvice Lakes National Park, with its cascading waterfalls and vibrant turquoise lakes, is like something out of a fairytale. Marvel at the untouched landscapes, hike along the trails, and breathe in the fresh air of Croatia's pristine wilderness. If you don’t have time to hike the entire park, you can choose multiple routes ranging from 1-8 hours. It all depends on your schedule. Since we left Zagreb later than planned, it left us with 3 hours to spend at the National Park and it was worth every minute.

Once you’re in Zadar, make sure to visit the Roman Forum, a testament to Zadar's rich past, and explore the unique Sea Organ, an architectural masterpiece which creates a melody from the waves of the Adriatic Sea. As the sun begins to set, head to the famous Greeting to the Sun installation and witness a mesmerizing light show. If you’re a sea lover like my boys, take your time in Zadar and spend a few extra days outside the city centre to enjoy the sea breeze
The sea breeze, carrying with it a subtle hint of salt and a touch of tranquility, is not just a sensation but an integral part of the city's identity.

Day Trip from Zadar

For the wandering souls, Zadar offers an array of island-hopping excursions. We chose to take a day drive to the captivating island of Dugi Otok, a hidden gem nestled in the mesmerizing Adriatic Sea located off the coast of Croatia. Dugi Otok, which translates to "Long Island," is a destination with untouched natural beauty, charming villages, and crystal-clear waters.

One of the island's most famous features is the Telascica Nature Park, a pristine bay encompassing majestic cliffs, serene saltwater lakes, and vibrant Mediterranean vegetation. However we chose to take our time, enjoy a local lunch and head over to another natural wonder Saharan Beach, often referred to as the Mediterranean's "hidden treasure." Its powdery white sands and turquoise waters resemble a postcard-worthy scene, making it an ideal spot to soak up the sun and unwind.

Wander through Split

As you continue south, the next stop on your journey is the magnificent city of Split, Home to the stunning Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Split effortlessly blends historical richness with a lively modern atmosphere. Lose yourself in the narrow streets of the old town, indulge in local delicacies at the bustling seafood markets, and soak up the vibrant ambiance of the Riva Promenade. If time allows, take a ferry to the nearby island of Hvar, known for its glamorous beaches and vibrant nightlife or take a leisure drive to explore a nearby hidden gem called Omiš, situated just 25 kilometers southeast of Split.

A Day trip to Hvar:

If you find yourself on the beautiful island of Hvar, nestled in the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea, but only have a day to explore, fear not! Hvar may be small, but it packs a punch when it comes to stunning scenery, rich history, and mouthwatering cuisine. With careful planning and a sense of adventure, you can experience the best of Hvar in just one day or two!

Start your day early to make the most of Hvar's charming Old Town. As you stroll through its narrow cobblestone streets, you will feel the history come alive. Admire the well-preserved Venetian architecture and stop by the magnificent Hvar Cathedral, with its towering bell tower.

Take a moment to absorb the breathtaking views from the fortress walls as you gaze out over the town and harbor below. Next, head to the bustling St. Stephen's Square, the heart of Old Town. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at one of the cozy cafes while soaking up the lively atmosphere. Don't forget to order a cup of invigorating Hvar lavender coffee, a local specialty that will awaken your senses.

A Day trip to Omiš:

Omiš offers a unique combination of natural beauty, rich history, and thrilling outdoor activities that make it a must-visit destination. Nestled at the mouth of the Cetina River, Omiš is framed by breathtaking mountains and the sparkling Adriatic Sea. Its stunning landscape provides a backdrop for a wide range of outdoor activities, making it a paradise for adventure enthusiasts.
But Omiš isn't just for adventure seekers. If you’re a history buff like my husband, you will also find yourself captivated by the town's intriguing past. Omiš was once a notorious pirate stronghold, with its inhabitants wreaking havoc on passing ships in the Middle Ages. Today, you can explore the remnants of its fortified walls, visit the Mirabella Fortress perched high above the town, and learn about the fascinating history.

Strolling through the narrow cobblestone streets of Omis, you'll discover charming cafes, delicious seafood restaurants, and quaint shops selling local crafts.

Unwind in Dubrovnik

Travel Tip: When crossing the border from Split to Dubrovnik you will need to pass through the Bosnian customs, so don’t make the same mistake we did and have your passports ready!

Top off your road adventure in the city of Dubrovnik, known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic” which has emerged as a top travel destination in recent years, and it's not hard to see why. This picturesque coastal city is a true gem, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and stunning natural beauty which is why it should be on every traveler's bucket list.

Dubrovnik is often referred to as a "living museum," and for a good reason. Step foot within the ancient city walls, and you'll be transported back in time. Take a walk along the ancient walls, visit the iconic Old Town, and immerse yourself in the city's rich history. Stroll along the Stradun, the city's main street, and soak in the atmosphere of centuries-old buildings adorned with terracotta roofs. Situated along the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea and surrounded by rugged mountains, Dubrovnik offers breathtaking natural beauty at every turn. One of the things that makes Dubrovnik truly special is the warm hospitality of its people.

Where to stay during the summer:

Since we have only visited Dubrovnik during the summer, we always opt to relax and unwind at Lapad Beach just west of the old town. Along the beach promenade, you'll find a variety of beachside bars and restaurants that offer delectable Dalmatian cuisine and refreshing ice-cold drinks. Lapad Beach stands out as one of the most beautiful and beloved destinations among locals and visitors alike. With its crystal-clear turquoise waters, pristine sandy shores, and a plethora of amenities, the beach offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding cliffs and islands, providing the perfect backdrop for a relaxing day under the sun.

A day trip to the Blue Caves:

Dubrovnik, Croatia, is not only known for its stunning medieval architecture but also for the breathtaking natural wonders. If you're a snorkeling enthusiast, a must-visit destination for a day trip from Dubrovnik is the enchanting Blue Caves. Exploring the underwater world around the caves is an experience you won't want to miss. Located on the island of Koločep, just a short boat ride away from Dubrovnik, the Blue Caves are a hidden gem that will leave you in awe. These caves are famous for their unique natural phenomenon where sunlight illuminates the interior, creating an otherworldly blue glow that reflects off the walls and water. To embark on this day trip, the best way to explore the caves is by boarding a small boat, piloted by experienced local guides.
