As an avid traveler, I am always seeking new adventures and hidden gems to explore. When I realized that driving from Portugal is to Spain is equivalent to a road trip from Orange County to Monterey, I couldn’t resist planning our family’s 4 week dream adventure in Portugal and Southern Spain. Little did I know that this road trip would become one of my most cherished travel memories and a pivotal moment for Corc Yoga, a project I started from my heartfelt love for Portugal.

Part 2: Road trip from the Algarve to Andalucia, Southern Spain.
Leaving behind the sun-kissed beaches of the Algarve, it’s now time to set off on a scenic drive that will take you through picturesque towns and countryside. Crossing the border into Spain, the landscape will gradually shift and you will find yourselves surrounded by the golden plains of Andalusia.
Malaga: Gateway to Andalusia
Nestled on the picturesque Costa del Sol in Spain, you have arrived to Malaga.. With its rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes, Malaga offers a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration.
Upon your arrival in Malaga, you'll be greeted by the warm Mediterranean breeze and the enchanting aroma of tapas. Drop your suitcases at a cozy hotel and head straight to the heart of the city — the charming Old Town. Wander through narrow winding streets lined with beautifully adorned balconies, colorful facades, and endless cafés.
Be sure to visit the iconic Malaga Cathedral, also known as "La Manquita" (the one-armed lady), due to its unfinished south tower. Marvel at the stunning architectural details and step inside to soak in the tranquil ambiance. Nearby, you'll find the Alcazaba, a well-preserved Moorish fortress offering panoramic views of the city.
Start the day with a visit to the birthplace of one of the greatest artists of all time, Pablo Picasso. The Picasso Museum is a testament to the artistic genius of this native son. Immerse yourself in Picasso's paintings, sculptures, and ceramics while learning about his extraordinary life. Continue your way to the enchanting Malaga Park, a lush green oasis in the heart of the city. Take a leisurely stroll along the tree-lined pathways, enjoy the vibrant floral displays, and bask in the tranquility of the surrounding nature.
In the afternoon, make your way to La Malagueta, Malaga's iconic beach. Dig your toes into the golden sand, take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear Mediterranean waters, and indulge in traditional seafood delicacies at one of the beachfront chiringuitos (beach restaurants).
Take a break from the city hustle and bustle and venture into the captivating countryside surrounding Malaga. Grab your camera and head east along the breathtaking coast, known as the Costa del Sol.
Say goodbye to Malaga's sandy beaches and continue your road trip to the captivating city of Seville, the vibrant capital of Spain's Andalusian region. If you have extra time to spare before reaching Seville, you’ll want to make a stop or two.
Malaga to Ronda (1.5 hour drive)
Begin your road trip by heading towards Ronda, a picturesque town perched on the edge of a deep gorge. Marvel at the Puente Nuevo, a towering bridge that connects Ronda's two parts, and offers breathtaking views of the El Tajo gorge. Explore the beautifully preserved historic center, filled with charming whitewashed buildings and cobblestone streets. Don't miss the Mondragon Palace and the stunning Santa Maria la Mayor Church.
Ronda to Arcos de la Frontera (2 hour drive)
Hit the road towards Arcos de la Frontera. Be prepared to be enchanted by this hilltop town, adorned with mesmerizing architecture and narrow winding streets. Discover the Arab Castle, perched high above the town, and explore one of its many beautiful churches, such as the Basílica Menor de Santa María de la Asunción. Enjoy panoramic views of the rolling countryside from the Mirador de Arcos lookout point.
Arcos de la Frontera to Jerez de la Frontera to Seville (1.5 hour drive)
Leave Arcos de la Frontera behind and make your way to Jerez de la Frontera, famous for its sherry wine and equestrian traditions. Visit one of the city's renowned wineries for a tour and tasting.
Seville: Discover the crown jewel of Andalusia
From Jerez, continue your journey to Seville, the crown jewel of Andalusia. Upon arrival, immerse yourself in the city's vibrant atmosphere by strolling through the historic center.
With its rich history, passionate flamenco music and dance, and delicious cuisine, Seville offers a truly remarkable cultural experience.
The city's undeniable beauty is filled with historic landmarks such as the stunning Seville Cathedral and the majestic Alcazar Palace, a masterpiece of Moorish design and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Don't miss the opportunity to climb 30 floors up the Giralda Tower for breathtaking panoramic views of the city.. Discover hidden gems around every corner as you wander through the narrow streets of the Santa Cruz neighborhood.

Seville's culinary landscape is another reason to venture to this marvelous city. From savoring authentic tapas and indulging in paella and churros dipped in rich chocolate, the flavors of Seville tantalize and delight.
For a taste of Seville's unique charm, head to the Plaza de España. This grand square is a visual feast, featuring a stunning tiled fountain, colorful ceramic benches, and beautifully decorated walls representing different Spanish provinces. Take a leisurely stroll, rent a rowboat on the canal or organize a fun family photo shoot with a local photographer like we did, it makes for the perfect souvenir and holds your favorite memories.
As the time in Seville draws to a close, perhaps you may feel a twinge of sadness. The vibrant energy, the rich culture, and the warmth of the city will leave an indelible mark on your heart. I hope to return one day soon.
The Grand Finale of our Trip
As we bid farewell to this remarkable trip, we are forever changed, our perspectives broadened, and our spirits renewed. The grand finale of our adventure may mark its conclusion, but the wanderlust within us remains ignited, forever urging us to embark upon new explorations and to seek out new horizons.
Perhaps you will go home from here or choose to continue exploring through Spain or maybe you will return to Lisbon like we did. Whatever you choose to do, I hope you have an amazing trip!
As for my family and I, we hesitated to say good-bye, our time in Portugal particularly didn't feel long enough, perhaps because we felt so much at home. We were overwhelmed with gratitude for having met such hospitable, warm and kind people.
Little did we realize, Portugal would become our second home and Spain our third.
