Crunch Clash: Porras vs. Churros – A Sweet Showdown
If you're visiting Southern Spain during the summer months, always brace yourself for the heat. Our visit to Malaga left us in 100+ degrees. Amidst the scorching heat, the vibrant city unfolds its rich tapestry of culture and history. From the ancient Alcazaba fortress to the lively Mercado Central de Atarazanas to charming streets adorned with bougainvillea, the warmth and hospitality of Malaga's authenticity shines through.
Over the years, my Southern California soccer-playing boys have learned to thrive under the golden sun, needless to say they have a strong tolerance for dry heat. So instead of choosing the traveler's common choice of gelato, we decided to relax at our favorite churro cafe below our apartment, Casa Aranda. We had no idea this place was a legend, it was buzzing with people. Founded in 1932, Casa Aranda has been dedicated to serving coffee, churros and chocolate, where people from all over the world come to indulge their appetite.
We were first-timers, but that didn’t matter. Somehow instinctively we knew, dip the churro in the chocolate.
And it was heavenly...
My husband saw me pull out my camera, and in an instant, he approached the owner, asking if I could venture into the kitchen to capture some moments. With a warm smile, the owner graciously granted permission, unlocking the door to a realm of culinary artistry. Stepping into the heart of the kitchen, I became a silent observer. The owner kindly opened the door to the kitchen and welcomed me in. The aroma of churros filled the simple cozy space. I was captivated by the efficient ballet of the churro-making process. The team moved seamlessly, each member contributing to the rhythmic dance of turning dough into golden-brown perfection. I felt a bit awkward, uncertain of where to position myself until the gentleman tending to the churros noticed my camera. With a warm smile, he gestured for me to wait, signaling that he was about to fulfill a new order and encouraged me to capture the culinary moment.
